A reverse in the flow of non potable water from your home or business can draw contaminants and pollution into the public supply, making it unsafe to drink.

At any point where water is drawn from a potable supply, it’s necessary that a backflow prevention device is utilized to prevent the reverse flow or “backflow” of water back into the source. These devices are also necessary in fire sprinkling systems. As a home or business owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that backflow is prevented by means of backflow prevention devices.

Backflow events are brought on by pressure changes in the system. If the pressure on the supply side drops due to a break in the line, this can create a vacuum, drawing non potable water back into the public supply. A backflow prevention device detects these changes in pressure and halts the flow of water in the reverse direction. There are two common varieties of backflow prevention devices: The Double Check Valve Assembly, and The Reduced Pressure Zone Valve Assembly. Both work by sealing off the public water supply when the pressure becomes greater downstream. The implementation of either is determined by local and state ordinances.

It’s not only recommended that you have a proper backflow device installed, but you should have it tested annually to ensure that everything is functioning as intended. This testing is necessary to determine whether any repairs or replacements are needed to keep the system adequately preventing backflow.

Backflow prevention is not only important for your own health and well being; it also protects your neighbors and community who draw from the same water supply.
