A fire extinguisher works to quell a fire by limiting one or more components of the fire triangle. These three elements are oxygen, fuel, and heat.
Types of Fire Extinguishers:
- Water and foam extinguishes by removing the element of heat, whereas carbon dioxide extinguishes by removing the oxygen.
- Dry chemical extinguishers work by disrupting the reaction between the fuel and oxygen, and are among the most common as they’re appropriate for a variety of fire types.
- Wet chemical extinguishers work by eliminating the heat element of the fire in addition to creating a barrier between the oxygen and fuel source to prevent re-ignition. These were developed especially for use in commercial kitchens where deep fryers are used.
There are 5 different classes of fire:
- Class A fires are fueled by common combustibles.
- Class B Fires are fueled by flammable liquids or gases.
- Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment.
- Class D fires involve combustible metals.
- Class K fires are fires in cooking oils or greases.
Selecting the proper fire extinguisher and proper maintenance is important.
It’s critical to choose the correct extinguisher type for the specific class or classes of fire for which the extinguisher may be used to put out. The most widely used extinguisher, the dry chemical type, is effective on type A,B,
and C fires. Class D fires require specialized dry powder extinguishers that interrupt the reaction. Class K fires require a wet chemical extinguisher.
Fire extinguishers must be regularly maintained and serviced in accordance with local, state, and national regulations. Annual maintenance includes a thorough examination of the extinguisher’s mechanical parts, fire extinguishing agent, and the propelling gas. In addition to this, fire extinguishers must be inspected every 30 days, ensuring that it’s placed in the correct location, is visible and accessible, and that gauge displays the correct pressure.
Before it comes time to actually use a fire extinguisher, it’s important to know the locations and types of extinguishers in your home or workplace. Extinguishers can be heavy, so it’s a good idea to practice picking them up to become acquainted with the weight and feel. Make sure to take the time to read the operating instructions and warnings, as not all fire extinguishers are alike. When practicing, it’s important to release the discharge hose and aim it an imaginary base of a fire. However, you mustn’t pull the pin or squeeze the lever, as this will break the extinguisher seal, causing it to lose pressure.
We are an authorized Amerex Fire Extinguisher Dealer which means we carry their entire line of fire extinguishers. We can also properly service any fire extinguisher in Ohio regardless of brand.
